1000 Darumas
A personal project to encorage determination with gestural economy of sumi-e brushwork and the bold graphic weight of traditional Japanese iconography. These pieces, sized between 2 inches to 3 feet are meant to be used by the collector by marking an eye while setting an intention. When the goal is achieved, the other eye should be drawn in. The completed piece serves as a reminder of their determination. If the goal is not achieved, the picture should be destroyed. The Daruma is a depiction of monk Bodhidharma; symbolizing perseverance and good luck. With the goal of painting at least 1000 Darumas, over 600 have been made and shared.
Selected Works
Each painting is a singular meditation, executed in deep black sumi ink and vibrant watercolor wash on heavy cotton rag.
